Media Summer Task
STOP STEREOTYPES AND DISCRIMINATION
THINK FOR YOURSELF (Short film) 4th April
A white mother is walking with her daughter and spots an asian man with a bag, stereotypically believing him to be a terrorist. Officers then appear to be running towards this man when in fact they are running towards a white man to arrest him instead. This short film is of the drama genre and uses a linear narrative structure. Elements of the film are represented in various ways. As an example this film seems to be shot in an area of predominately white people as there are no other races besides asians. We also get this sense of a subconscious fear due to the woman's facial expression on the close-up. Possibly inferring that this fear may lie in us all but as something we keep hidden from others. Panning shot, used to focus on the character. Wide shot, sets the scene instantly. Close-up, allows the audience to capture the white man's expression at the realisation of being found. A casual park kind of scenery, allows the target audience to relate more. No lighting used, daylight and casual clothing. An ambient soundtrack is used, this creates the intended effect as there is no speech, while there is music rising in tempo and pace. The target audience appears to be that of ages 16+ due to seriousness of the issue being displayed. One idea I can take from this is the slow motion effect used throughout. The effect of the slow moving film contrasting with the rising music creates different feelings
"Transformation" a Short film on Trans Discrimination & Hate Crime awareness
A transcended male is walking down a path when he is bullied by a boy and girl who appear to know him as he tries to avoid them. They then attack the character known as Chris and shout derogatory and prejudiced comments at him. He eventually escapes back to his home where he begins to apply make up and do his hair when his dad comes home. Disgusted, his dad attempts to rub off the make-up and cut his hair where he then flashbacks to his encounter with the boy and girl in the first scene. This time however, we see a different scenario where everyone has accepted him for who he is. This film is also a drama that uses a linear narrative structure. techniques such as close-ups are used to capture facial expressions and important objects as well as mid-shots used to show a characters body language. Daylight is used outdoors and normal lighting is used indoors. Background music isn't as heavily used but is present, this film contains more dialogue. The target audience appears to be of the same age, 16+. One thing I think I could take from this film was the flashback effect. It allowed the audience to get a different viewpoint/perspective, allowing for more variety.
Teenage Suicide-Short Film
A boy wakes up in his bed and begins to think before proceeding upstairs to the bathroom where he washes his face as he appears to be thinking deeply. The boy has a relative who is ill and this is clearly affecting him inside as he drops down to the ground. He then finds a gun and it becomes more clear that he may be contemplating suicide. In the end, he makes the decision not to take his own life. As the others, this is once again a linear narrative structure. camera techniques used were the bird's-eye view, really giving the audience more of an understanding of how weak the character was at this point in time. The location was within a house, this portrays the idea of people and their inner struggles that we most likely know nothing of. This short film also uses background music to set a specific mood throughout. The target audience here would be 18+ in my opinion as we are dealing with factors such as suicide and guns. An idea I would like to take from this film would be it's variety in camera shots as it allows for more diversity within the film and a range of ideas and interpretations to be created.
